Bliss List #25: Wild Wonders in Whatcom

Some people are born here and never leave.  Others find themselves unexpectedly in Whatcom County thinking, “Wait, how did that happen?”

Regardless of how you got here, Whatcom County is full of wonders.  In this issue of The Bliss List, we’ll highlight three, plus share some wild numbers with you.  Happy exploring!

1. Dinosaurs in Fairhaven
Help me to understand how there can be dinosaur bones in Fairhaven.  Not only are they thousands of years old, but they come from faraway places such Morocco and Montana.  And here they rest, inside Rare Earth Gallery of Minerals.  Dinosaurs bring out Dan’s inner boy; we can’t walk past the windows of femurs and savagely toothed jaws without making a pilgrimage.  If names like Hadrosaurus, Mosasaur (pictured here) or Plesiosaurus make your heart beat faster, or if you just like pretty gemstones, this place is for you!

2. Bayou in Ferndale

If you haven’t walked the boardwalk in Ferndale’s Tennant Lake, you are in for a treat.  Wear shoes that are okay to get wet, however, as some of the planks can be a bit under water.  Trust me.  It’s worth it!  The lake is covered with Jurassic Park-like lily pads, and you expect to see a Brontosaurus munching away.  One time Dan and I walked the boardwalk, and a rowboat floated by with two fellows who were catfishing.  Their accents and attire might have been out of “Deliverance,” but their friendly nature was all Whatcom County.

3. Eggs Benedict on a Waffle in Bellingham
It wouldn’t be a Bliss List without something to eat!  The first time I took a bite of the Mount Bakery’s Eggs Benedict on a waffle, I had a “I’ll have what she’s having moment.”  The explosion in my mouth of savory layered on top of a hint of sweet elicited a most unladylike groan.  Typically I wolf my food on the way to help someone buy or sell a home.  That first time, I slowed down to savor every bite.  I still do!
